Product Details

The Chinese Gold Panda Series has been a yearly release from the Chinese Mint since 1982. It started with four sizes—1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz—and added a 1/20 oz coin in 1983. One of the key features of this series is the changing Giant Panda artwork on the reverse side each year. Right now, BullionMax is offering the 1998 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin with the Small Date engraving.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in protective plastic!
  • 17th release of Gold Pandas!
  • Small Date specimens!
  • Final mintage of only 4,168 coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of 50 Yuan by the People’s Republic of China.
  • Obverse displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse features a Giant Panda resting on a rock with bamboo shoots.

The front of the 1998 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This round building is part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, an important cultural site from the Ming Dynasty era. The image also includes the staircase leading up to the main entrance.

On the back of the 1998 Chinese Gold Panda, you’ll see a Giant Panda lying on a rock, holding bamboo shoots. Even though pandas are classified as carnivores, their diet mainly consists of bamboo. Because bamboo isn’t very energy-rich, pandas need to eat up to 40 pounds a day to stay nourished, spending most of their time eating.

Bamboo’s low nutrition means pandas only get about 20% of its nutrients, so they’ve adapted in unique ways. Pandas have a special wrist bone that acts like a thumb, helping them hold bamboo stalks. They also have strong jaws and flat molars that help them chew the tough plants.

Each 1998 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin from BullionMax comes in protective plastic to keep it safe during delivery. These are Small Date versions, which feature a smaller-sized date engraving.

If you have questions about 1/2 oz gold coins, the BullionMax team is happy to help. Call us at 800-729-3202, connect with us on web chat, or email us anytime.
