The addition of alloy makes these coins more durable and resistant to scratches. Each one arrives in an individual plastic flip.

The American Eagle Coin program, initiated in 1986 by the United States Mint, began with gold and silver options. Today, you can acquire American Eagle Coins in silver, gold, platinum, or palladium, available in both bullion and proof versions.

These gold coins are offered in various sizes, including fractional options that cater to budget-conscious buyers. While the themes remain consistent, each metal type features distinct designs on both sides of the coins.

On the obverse, you’ll find Lady Liberty gracefully walking off the front of the coin, with the sun at her back, a torch in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left. Originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, this image was used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coins from 1907 to 1933. Look for the inscriptions “Liberty” and the minting year, 1999.

Turning to the reverse of the 1999 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin, you’ll discover a poignant scene of a bald eagle family. The male eagle returns to the nest, clutching an olive branch in his talons, while the female and hatchlings patiently await his arrival. This touching image, sculpted by Miley Busiek in 1986, is exclusive to these coins.
