The Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin was introduced by the Austrian Mint in 1989 and has since become one of the world’s most sought-after coins, often recognized as Europe’s best-selling gold coin. The series initially featured 1 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins, originally issued with face values in Austrian schillings. In 2002, the series updated its coins to feature Euro denominations. Currently, the 2002 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
From its launch in 1989 until 2001, the Austrian Philharmonic coins were valued in Austrian schillings, Austria’s former currency. Following the Euro’s introduction in 2002, the Austrian Mint updated the face values to align with this new currency. It is important to note that these coins are only considered legal tender within Austria.
Each 2002 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin is available with a protective plastic flip. The 1 oz coin remains the most popular weight in the series, sharing its long-standing history with the 1/4 oz coin. Since its debut in 1989, the 1 oz Gold Philharmonic has maintained the same iconic designs created by Thomas Pesendorfer.
On the obverse of the 2002 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin, you will find a detailed depiction of the Great Pipe Organ, a prominent feature of the Golden Concert Hall in the Musikverein. While the Musikverein hosts multiple concert halls, the Golden Concert Hall is best known as the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s performances.
The reverse side of the 2002 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coin showcases a variety of musical instruments. This design features a cello at the center, flanked by two violins, with a background that includes a French horn, bassoon, and harp.
