Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins were first introduced in 1979 as a direct alternative to the South African Krugerrand. At the time, Western countries were imposing sanctions on South Africa, which affected the Krugerrand’s availability, creating demand for another reliable gold bullion coin. The Gold Maple Leaf was also the first 24-karat gold bullion coin ever issued. Now, 2004 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of 2004 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, this effigy shows Her Majesty at 79 years old. The right-profile portrait is distinctive for its simplicity, portraying the Queen without a crown or tiara. This marked a shift from previous designs, making it one of the few official effigies of her reign to show her in a more understated manner. Notably, the 2004 release is the first to feature this version of Elizabeth II’s likeness.
On the reverse of the 2004 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is the iconic sugar maple leaf. A defining symbol of Canadian heritage, the maple leaf represents unity, diversity, and pride in the natural beauty of Canada. Its appeal has made it a global emblem of Canada, easily recognized around the world.
Walter Ott designed the maple leaf featured on the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins. His meticulous design captures the fine veining and natural texture of a real sugar maple leaf, ensuring it stands out in both appearance and security. The precision in the design has made it not only beautiful but also highly resistant to counterfeiting.
These 2004 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are carefully housed in protective plastic to help preserve their condition. When the Gold Maple Leaf Series began in 1979, only the 1 oz gold coin was available. By November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint expanded the lineup, and the 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins were the first fractional weights introduced.
