Coin Highlights:

  • Comes in a protective plastic flip!
  • Celebrating the 20th year of the American Gold Eagle coin series!
  • Limited total mintage of 300,043 coins!
  • Contains 1/10 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Bears a face value of $5 (USD), fully backed by the US government.
  • Obverse features Lady Liberty, while the reverse showcases a family of eagles.

In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign US coinage. The result was the stunning Lady Liberty ultra high relief $20 gold piece, inspiring the design on the American Gold Eagle coins.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, strides forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The Capitol building stands in the background.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter, features a bald eagle flying towards a nest with a family of eagles, symbolizing the importance of family in America.

These coins consist of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. Since their introduction in 1986, the 1 oz and 1/10 oz Gold Eagles consistently have the highest annual mintage numbers. In 2005, the 1/10 oz Gold Eagles were only about 56,500 coins shy of the 1 oz mintage.

In 2001, the price of gold began to rise, reaching over $500 per ounce by 2005. Starting at $435.60 per ounce in 2005, it finished the year at $513.00 per ounce, a 17% increase.
