The obverse of the 2008 1/10 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coin features Mexico’s national seal. This design shows a golden eagle facing left, perched on a prickly pear cactus. The eagle has its wings open as it uses its beak and claws to attack a snake, a scene taken from Aztec legend.

On the reverse side of the 2008 Proof Gold Libertad, you’ll see the famous Winged Victory statue. This statue stands atop the Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. Behind the figure, the mountains Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl rise in the background.

Before the series became annual in 2004, Proof Gold Libertads were issued just twice: in 1983 with a limited 1 oz release, and in 1989 with a small mintage of 704 coins in the 1/2 oz size. No other Proof Gold Libertads were issued until the program resumed in 2004.

Each 2008 1/10 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin is housed in a protective capsule. The total mintage for this size was 500 coins, matching the mintage levels of the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/20 oz versions that year. The 1/4 oz coin had a slightly higher mintage of 800. These coins feature frosted design elements over mirrored backgrounds.
