Product Details

The Chinese Mint introduced the Gold Panda series in 1982, initially offering four different coin weights and later adding a fifth option in 1983 to meet the varied needs of investors. This series is widely admired for the yearly updates to the Giant Panda design on the reverse, a feature that has since inspired other mints worldwide. Right now, 2009 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins are available online at BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives inside a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 28th coin in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Contains 1/20 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of 20 Yuan backed by the government of China.
  • Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is on the obverse.
  • Two Giant Panda cubs are depicted on the reverse.

Each 2009 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin is securely packaged in a sealed plastic pouch. The 1/20 oz size was issued from 1983 to 2015, with a face value of 5 Yuan from 1983 to 2000 and 20 Yuan from 2001 to 2015. In 2016, the Chinese Mint adjusted this coin’s weight to 1 Gram gold instead of 1/20 oz.

The Giant Panda, while beloved globally, faces ongoing threats in the wild and is classified as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Habitat loss, deforestation, and bamboo shortages pose significant risks to the estimated 1,800 pandas that remain in the wild. Conservation efforts, including the establishment of dedicated reserves, have played an essential role in supporting the survival of these iconic animals.

On the obverse of the 2009 Chinese Gold Panda Coin, you’ll find the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This structure, located at the heart of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, is an important symbol in Chinese culture and Taoism.

The reverse side of the 2009 1/20 oz Gold Panda Coin features two Giant Panda cubs among bamboo. The design uses varied finishes to emphasize the black and white fur of the pandas, adding a realistic touch to this peaceful scene.
