First introduced in 1981, the Mexican Gold Libertad is the longest-running coin in the broader Mexican Libertad Series. These coins are offered in a variety of weights, including 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz options. The 1 oz gold version was among the first to debut back in 1981. Since 2002, the Mexican Mint has struck these coins annually. Right now, 2009 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
During the early years of the Gold Libertad, production was inconsistent. The 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coins debuted in 1981, but production paused until 1991, when minting resumed with the addition of 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. These coins were produced until 1994, then briefly paused again before returning for good in 2002. Since then, the series has been issued regularly.
Each 2009 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin arrives in a protective flip. The mintage of 6,200 coins might seem modest, but it stands as the highest figure in the series between 2003 and 2022.
The obverse side of the 2009 Mexican Gold Libertad features Mexico’s modern coat of arms. This image of a golden eagle perched on a cactus while battling a snake has roots in the Aztec Codex Mendoza. Surrounding this main design are 10 smaller depictions of Mexico’s historical coats of arms, including another version of the eagle and snake at the 12 o’clock position.
On the reverse of the 2009 1 oz Gold Libertad Coin, you’ll see Winged Victory. A powerful symbol of Mexico’s fight for independence, Winged Victory stands proudly holding a laurel wreath and broken chains. She stands on the Mexican Independence Victory Column, with the famous volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background.
