When a president was unmarried or widowed, the Mint instead featured a design of Lady Liberty as depicted on American currency from that era. Right now, BullionMax has 2010-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coins available in perfect condition.

Each 2010-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin is certified MS70, meaning it has its original mint luster and no visible flaws. The coin is encapsulated in a protective holder with a label hand-signed by David Hall, a co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.

James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States and remains the only lifelong bachelor to have held the office. Since there was no First Lady during his presidency, his release in the First Spouse Series features Lady Liberty instead. Buchanan had a long career in politics before becoming president, serving in roles such as Pennsylvania State Representative, US Congressman, US Senator, Secretary of State, and Ambassador to both Russia and the United Kingdom.

The obverse of the 2010-W First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin features a classic depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-facing bust was originally designed in 1836 by Christian Gobrecht and appeared on several US gold coins, including the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle.

On the reverse, James Buchanan is shown as a young man working as a bookkeeper in his family’s Pennsylvania country store. Before he entered politics, Buchanan built a reputation as a respected attorney in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
