The United States Mint launched the First Spouse Series to honor the women who served as First Ladies of the United States. However, for the 2012 release marking President Chester A. Arthur’s term, there was no First Lady to feature. In a historic move, the Mint selected suffragist Alice Paul to be recognized in the series instead. Today, BullionMax offers the 2012-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin.
Coin Highlights:
Chester A. Arthur did not have a First Spouse coin featuring his wife, as Nell Arthur passed away in 1880, more than a year before he took office following the assassination of President James A. Garfield. Arthur remains one of the few American presidents who served as a bachelor or widower while in office.
Each 2012-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin is offered in perfect condition. With an MS70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service, this coin has its original mint luster and no visible flaws. Alice Paul is the only figure in the First Spouse Series who was not a First Lady. The slab protecting the coin includes a label signed by David Hall, co-founder of PCGS.
The obverse of the 2012-W US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin features a portrait of Alice Paul, commemorating her work in the women’s suffrage movement. Best known for her role in securing the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, Paul also drafted the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923 and dedicated her life to advocating for gender equality under the law.
The reverse of the 2012-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin showcases a suffragette marching with an American flag. She wears a sash reading “VOTES FOR WOMEN,” symbolizing the fight for women’s voting rights in the early 20th century.
