The First Spouse Series is a collection of 1/2 oz gold coins issued by the United States Mint to honor the First Ladies of the United States. Introduced in 2007, the series follows the spouses of U.S. Presidents in the order of their husband’s time in office, ending with Betty Ford. The latest release in the collection was the 2020 Barbara Bush Coin, with each First Lady eligible for inclusion after their husband’s appearance in the Presidential $1 Coin Series. Edith Wilson became the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson in 1915, following the passing of his first wife the year prior. Their marriage took place during his first term, and she would go on to play a significant role in his presidency, particularly after he suffered health issues in his second term. Her influence in the White House led to her being considered one of the most powerful First Ladies in history.

Each 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin is available here in flawless condition. Coins graded Mint State 70 have full, original mint luster and no visible imperfections.

The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin features a detailed portrait of Edith Wilson. She was a trusted advisor and close companion to President Wilson, often traveling with him during World War I. As First Lady, she implemented resource-saving measures at the White House, such as meatless Mondays and wheatless Wednesdays, and even kept a flock of sheep on the White House lawn.

On the reverse, the design highlights a significant moment in history with Edith Wilson’s hand resting on President Wilson’s hand as he grips a cane. After suffering a severe stroke in 1919, the President had limited physical abilities, and Edith took on the responsibility of managing many aspects of his role. She is often called the Secret President for the way she determined which issues would be brought directly to him and which would be handled by others.
