The First Spouse Series is a collection of 1/2 oz gold coins produced by the United States Mint to honor the First Ladies of the United States. Launched in 2007, the series follows the order of each First Lady’s service alongside her husband’s presidency, ending with Betty Ford. The program’s most recent release was the 2020 Barbara Bush coin, with eligibility determined by the $1 Presidential Coin Series. Now, you can purchase the 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 2013-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin features a portrait of the First Lady. She played a vital role in advising President Wilson and accompanied him on international travels during World War I. At home, she supported wartime conservation efforts by promoting initiatives like meatless Mondays and wheatless Wednesdays and even maintained a flock of sheep on the White House lawn.
On the reverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin, her hand is depicted resting on President Wilson’s as he grips a cane. After the President suffered a severe stroke in 1919, Edith took on a significant role in overseeing his responsibilities. She managed access to him and determined which matters required his personal attention, earning her the nickname “the Secret President.”
The marriage between President Wilson and Edith Wilson was often scrutinized due to the short time between his first wife’s passing and his remarriage. Despite public criticism, Edith remained a steadfast figure in the White House, playing an essential role in the administration’s operations. After President Wilson’s term, she dedicated herself to preserving his legacy and defending both his policies and her role in his presidency until her passing in 1961. At the time of her death, she was the longest-living First Lady.
These 2013-W 1/2 oz US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coins are available in perfect condition, certified Mint State 70. This grade signifies a coin with no visible imperfections and full mint luster. Each coin also includes a hand-signed label featuring the signature of David Hall, co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.
