These 2018 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins, listed in BU condition, show no signs of wear. James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design captures the essence of the plains and prairies of the Upper Midwest.

The Buffalo Nickel coins featured a portrait of an American Indian leader on one side and a powerful image of an American bison on the other. Authorized by President William Howard Taft’s administration, Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel circulated from 1913 to 1938.

Adorning the obverse of the 2018 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin is the right-profile portrait of the tribal leader. Fraser reputedly amalgamated facial features from three different American Indian leaders. Engravings include “Liberty,” the year of issue, and Fraser’s last name initial of “F.”

The reverse of all American Gold Buffalo coins showcases the left-side image of a bison, standing on a mound of dirt and grass. Encircling engravings include the nation of issue, national motto, weight, purity, metal content, and face value. The bison’s inspiration is traced back to Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo.
