The obverse field of the 2021 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin remains inspired by James Earle’s 1913 Indian Head Nickel design. This is the image of a Native American chief in a right-facing portrait. He sports braided hair and a mean mug. The inscriptions here have the word LIBERTY and 2021.

The reverse field of the 2021 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin borrows imagery from the 1914 Indian Head Nickel design. This is the image of a Buffalo standing on top of a high mound. Its head and rear end press up against the edges of the coin. There is an array of inscriptions surrounding the primary visual design that include; “The United States of America,” “In God we Trust,” the face value, the metal content, and the weight of the coin.
