Product details

The 2021 American Gold Buffalo 1-oz coin was inspired by the 1913-1938 buffalo nickel. The gold buffalo features James Earle Fraser’s 1913 portrait of an indigenous American on the obverse side. It is believed that Fraser compiled images of Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne nation and Chief Big Tree of the Kiowa when creating the design, both of whom posed for portraits, perhaps in an attempt to create an “ideal” Native American for this purpose. The reverse side shows a Fraser-designed American bison, symbolic of America’s vast heartland, the Great Plains.

These coins carry a face value of $50 face value, and the U.S. government guarantees their purity and weight. With an exceptionally high purity and fascinating design history, the series is a popular one in steady demand.

Buffalo coins have been minted at West Point by the U.S. Mint since 2006. The 1-oz coin was the first in the Mint’s history stamped in 24-karat gold of 0.9999 fineness. Each coin carries a face value of $50, although the content of gold has always been worth more than the nominal value.

With a weight of 1 troy ounce of 24-karat gold, these coins are of exceptionally high gold purity, distinct from American Eagles, which are stamped in a more durable alloy but with lower gold content.

The American gold buffalo’s design pays homage to the Wild West period of American history. Its gold content reminds us that, when the West was won, salaries were paid and bets were settled in gold. Get your very own piece of timeless Americana today!
