In 2019, the United States Mint decided to change the reverse design of both the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle for the 2021 date mark, marking the 35th anniversary of the series.
Throughout 2020, the US Mint and a citizen committee reviewed over 30 design options for the reverse of the Gold Eagle. The chosen design, by Jennie Norris, is now the new face of the American Gold Eagle Series. Ms. Norris submitted her design as a member of the Artistic Infusion Program at the US Mint.
The obverse of the 2021 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 Coins features Lady Liberty, an iconic design created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is depicted walking toward the viewer, holding up a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
On the reverse, you’ll find a new depiction of the American bald eagle by Ms. Norris. This design showcases the head of a bald eagle in left-profile relief with impressive details in the bird’s features.
These 2021 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 Coins are flawless specimens. Coins in Mint State 70 condition exhibit full, original mint luster with no flaws. Early Release coins are those graded by the NGC within 30 days of the original release date.
