The florin was originally introduced in England in 1344 during the reign of Edward III and remained part of Australia’s currency system until the country moved to decimal currency in 1966.

Edward III introduced the English florin in hopes of establishing a gold coin that could rival Italy’s widely accepted Florentine florin. Valued at six shillings, the coin depicted the king on his throne on one side and a stylized cross on the other. Despite these efforts, the English florin was short-lived and was replaced within a year by the noble.

The obverse of the 2022 Australian Gold Florin Coin features the final coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Jody Clark, this right-facing effigy shows Her Majesty wearing the George IV State Diadem.
