Way back in 1967, South Africa made history by reintroducing gold coins to the world. Instead of trading at a fixed face value, the Krugerrand is legal tender in South Africa and valued at gold’s spot price. With this simple and ingenious innovation, governments no longer had to worry about, say, minting silver dimes worth $0.15 each. Investors around the world loved the Krugerrand, which rapidly gained a 90% share of the gold coin marketplace. In 1984 alone, the U.S. bought more than $600 million in Krugerrands or about 1.7 million coins. For a decade, “Krugerrand” was synonymous with “gold coin.”

Other countries eventually realized they were losing money by not competing with the Krugerrand and began planning their own gold coins. However, other nations universally insisted on minting gold coins with absurdly low face values to ensure they’d never actually be used for transactions.

The Krugerrand changed the world. This gold bullion coin inspired every single modern gold coin that followed, from the Canadian gold maple leaf (the first pure gold coin) to the American eagle (similarly minted in 22-karat gold) and all the rest. It’s the only gold coin we know of that’s accepted legal tender at its actual value based on its gold weight. It’s rugged and durable, engineered to be used. They’re also strikingly beautiful.

We’re thrilled to have the latest 2022 1 oz gold Krugerrands, straight from the South African Mint, available for sale right now.

A closer look at the 1 oz South African gold Krugerrand coin

The Krugerrand gets its name from Paul Kruger, the famed, long-serving President of the Republic of South Africa, and “Rand” which is the unit of currency in South Africa. (Sort of the same as if we called the greenback the Washingtonbuck.)

On the obverse (front) side, the gold Krugerrand features a very old-fashioned portrait of Kruger, an 1892 design by Otto Schultz. Surrounding this portrait are the words SUID-AFRIKA in Afrikaans and its English translation, “SOUTH AFRICA.”

The reverse features a 1947 Coert Steynberg engraving of a springbok antelope, the symbolic animal of South Africa. At first glance you’d think this little critter is bounding across a grassy plain. In fact, it’s engaging an a curious behavior known as pronking (leaping into the air). No one’s sure why springbok do this. Threat display? Warning to predators? Sheer joy and exuberance? Who’s to say?

The reverse of the Krugerrand is inscribed with the legend “KRUGERRAND,” the date of minting, and its gold weight in Afrikaans and English.

Like the American gold eagle, the Krugerrand is minted in 22-karat gold. Unlike the eagle, the Krugerrand’s alloy is 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, which gives this coin its unique rosy hue. Each coin has 1 troy oz of gold by weight (answering the question that puzzles many beginning collectors, “Why does my 1 oz coin weigh more than 1 oz?”

The Krugerrand is just as legendary today as it was in 1967. Although we modern coin collectors are spoiled for choices, the 1 oz gold Krugerrand is still, year after year, a must-have among serious gold coin enthusiasts. Note you can’t buy gold bullion Krugerrands from the South African Mint directly, so why not work with us? Get your 2022 1 oz gold Krugerrand today!
