No animal is more iconically Australian than the Kangaroo, and among the wide range of unique Australian animals available to coin collectors, the kangaroo coins are certainly the most popular of the series.  The new 2023 kangaroo 1 oz gold coin is now available, featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II and a charming new kangaroo design.  Each coin is 99.99% pure gold from the Perth Mint.

Collectors of Australian animal coins will undoubtedly know that the Perth Mint updates each design annually.  This new 2023 design for the 1 oz gold kangaroo features the "world's most famous marsupial" turning its neck to look back over its shoulder with eucalyptus and grass trees in the background, denoting the enchanting wilderness of the Outback.  Also included is the text "2023 1 oz 9999 GOLD" along the side and a stylized, underlined "KANGAROO" which frames the majestic marsupisial nicely.  This design was created by the artist Ing Ing Jong.

The obverse includes a special, commemorative design of Queen Elizabeth II's latest effigy which supplements the traditional Jody Clark portrait of the former monarch with "1952 – 2022", signifying the period of her reign.

About the Australian gold kangaroo series

Every year since 1990, gold kangaroo coins from Perth Mint have been available to bullion buyers worldwide in a variety of weights (when the series launched in 1986, these bullion coins were called “nuggets,” which honestly is dumb branding by Perth Mint – which is more memorable, the world’s largest marsupial or a lump of gold?)

Each year, Perth Mint changes up the design and the style of the kangaroo(s) featured on the reverse of the 1 oz and fractional gold kangaroo coins (1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz). They also mint a humongous 1 kg gold kangaroo variation, but this one uses the classic Stuart Devlin-designed kangaroo surrounded by rays of sun – which you’ll still find on the kangaroo silver bullion coin series.
