The Proof Gold Libertad has a unique history at the Mexican Mint. For the first 19 years, the coins were issued only twice. The debut release was a 1 oz gold coin in 1983, followed by a 1/2 oz gold coin in 1989. After that, it took another 15 years before Proof Gold Libertads were issued again.

In 2004, the Mexican Mint began issuing the Proof Gold Libertad as an annual numismatic coin. They reintroduced the coins in 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold and added 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold coins to the series. Since then, these five weights have been released each year, and in 2018, the Mexican Mint added reverse proof coins in 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold to the lineup.

On the obverse of the 2024 1/10 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coin, the Mexican Mint features the national coat of arms. This modern coat of arms is based on an Aztec symbol from the 16th century, which was a sign from the gods to the Aztecs indicating where to build their capital. The design includes a golden eagle devouring a snake.

The reverse design of the 2024 Proof Mexican Gold Libertads showcases Winged Victory. This design depicts the statue as seen atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. The statue, designed in 1911, was placed on the column in 1921 to commemorate Mexico’s independence.
