On important element related to the dragon in Chinese culture is the dragon dance. The dragon dance originated as a rain-making ritual in agricultural communities. Dancers would mimic the undulating movements of a dragon to encourage rainfall. Over time, it evolved into a more general symbol of good fortune. Today, the length of the dragon in the dance is believed to correlate with the amount of luck it brings – longer dragons are considered more auspicious.

The obverse of the 2024 Australian Rectangular Gold Dragons features His Majesty King Charles III. This is the first time His Majesty appears on this series. The portrait, designed by Dan Thorne, shows King Charles III in a simple suit without a crown, facing left.

This year’s design captures the dragon with its eyes fixed on a flaming pearl, set against a backdrop of stylized water and clouds. The dragon is believed to control these elements, which symbolize good luck.
