The Flowing Hair Dollar, minted in 1794 and 1795, holds the distinction of being the first official silver dollar released by the US federal government. The obverse featured Liberty with flowing hair, symbolizing the nation’s ideals of freedom. The reverse displayed an eagle surrounded by a wreath. Though only about 160,000 pieces were minted, the Flowing Hair Dollar was crucial in establishing America’s monetary system and independence.

All 2024 1 oz Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coins available here are in perfect condition. Graded PF70, these coins have full mint luster with no imperfections. The ultra-cameo proof coins feature strong, frosted designs against deeply mirrored fields. The First Day of Issue designation means these coins were certified within 24 hours of their release from the Mint.

The obverse of the 2024 Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin shows a right-profile portrait of Liberty, designed by Robert Scot. His design captures Liberty’s flowing hair, and Scot, as the first Chief Engraver of the US Mint, created the original Flowing Hair Dollar in addition to many early American coin designs.

On the reverse side, the 2024 1 oz Proof Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin features the original heraldic eagle design from the US Mint. The eagle is perched on a wreath that surrounds it, with historic edge-lettering reading “HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.”
