In 2016, KOMSCO launched the Chiwoo Cheonwang Series as one of its primary annual bullion collections. Now, in 2024, this series continues with new portrayals of the renowned mythological figure from Korean and Chinese history. Medal Highlights:
Since 2016, the Chiwoo Cheonwang Series has provided new reverse designs of the famous God of War each year. Recent designs often include Chiwoo with a member of the Zi:Sin, the 12 Guardians of Korean mythology. The Zi:Sin figures are also part of their own series, creating a connection between two major KOMSCO bullion programs.
In Korean mythology, Chiwoo Cheonwang is revered as a powerful warrior god. He is often depicted as a fierce and indomitable figure, embodying the spirit of martial prowess. Chiwoo is most famous for his legendary battle against the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) of China. This conflict is a central episode in Chinese mythology, with Chiwoo often portrayed as the embodiment of chaos and opposition to the Yellow Emperor’s order.
The obverse of the 2024 1 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals features the legendary Doggaebi. Similar to hobgoblins in Western tales, Doggaebi is believed to offer protection. Historically, Korean people would hang his effigy in their homes to ward off evil spirits.
On the reverse of the 2024 South Korean Gold Chiwoos, Chiwoo is depicted extending a weapon with his right hand as he leads naval forces forward. In the background, you can see Draco, a member of the Zi:Sin, representing the Year of the Dragon in the Zodiac. The Zi:Sin often fight alongside Chiwoo and his forces.
These 2024 1 oz South Korean Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. They come in protective plastic capsules with a limited mintage of only 300 medals.
