The design of the British Britannia coins was created by Philip Nathan in 1987. His image of Britannia was selected by The Royal Mint through an artistic competition. She holds a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, resting on the Union Jack shield. The background features a latent security device, micro-text engraving around Britannia, tincture lines on the Union Jack, and textured wave motion lines.
