The obverse of the 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin showcases a right-profile portrait of an indigenous American. This portrait, created by Fraser, is based on a combination of three different tribal figures from early 20th-century America. It was the first time an indigenous person was featured on American coins.
On the reverse side, the 2025 American Gold Buffalo features the left-profile image of an American Plains bison. This depiction, inspired by Black Diamond from the Central Park Zoo, shows the bison standing on a small mound, grazing peacefully.
The buffalo played a pivotal role in Indigenous spiritual and cultural practices. Many ceremonies and rituals centered around the buffalo, honoring its life-giving qualities and seeking blessings for the tribe. The buffalo’s migration patterns influenced the nomadic lifestyle of Plains peoples, who followed the herds across vast landscapes. This nomadic existence, in turn, shaped their worldview and social structures.
The 2025 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. As the only 24-karat gold coin issued by the U.S. Mint, it contains .9999 pure gold. Coins are individually packaged in plastic flips or in tubes of 20 coins.
