On the reverse of the 2025 American Gold Buffalo, you’ll see Fraser’s depiction of an American buffalo. The buffalo was modeled after Black Diamond, a bison from New York’s Central Park Zoo. The image of the buffalo on a mound symbolizes the rugged spirit of the American West and the nation’s natural heritage, resonating deeply with the public and contributing to the lasting appeal of the original Buffalo Nickel.
Fraser’s designs for the Buffalo Nickel, which inspired the Gold Buffalo, marked a shift from the neoclassical style previously dominant in American coin design. His work celebrated American themes and helped set new standards in numismatic art.
