The obverse of the 2025-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo shows a right-facing portrait of an indigenous man. James Earle Fraser created this design in 1913 by combining the features of three different tribal leaders of the time. The figure is shown with braided hair and two feathers tied in, honoring Native American heritage.

On the reverse, the 2025-W Proof American Gold Buffalo features a left-facing image of an American bison standing on a patch of land. This 1913 design by Fraser was inspired by Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York City during the early 1900s.

These images were originally made for the Buffalo Nickel, which replaced the Liberty Head Nickel in 1913. The change was approved during President William Howard Taft’s administration, and Fraser’s artwork helped bring a new look to US coinage.
