This is the image of a Native American chief in a right-facing portrait. He sports braided hair and a mean mug. The inscriptions here have the word “Liberty” and the year.

The reverse field of the 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin also borrows imagery from the 1914 Indian Head Nickel design. This is the image of a Buffalo standing on top of a high mound. Its head and rear end press up against the edges of the coin. There is an array of inscriptions surrounding the primary visual design that include; “The United States of America,” “In God we Trust,” the face value, the metal content, and weight of the coin.
