The history of the ducat gold coin in Europe dates back to the year 1252 when mints in Florence and Genoa began issuing florins. That denomination was not standardized for weight and fineness at first, but did lead to the introduction of a standardized ducat in 1285 in Venice. Nearly three centuries later, the first Netherlands Ducat denomination was issued. Now, 1 Ducat Netherlands Gold Coins are available to you online for purchase from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
One of the more unique aspects of the 1 Ducat Netherlands Gold Coin is that it has retained the exact same design elements on the obverse and reverse for more than 400 years now. From the first coins issued by provincial mints in 1586 through the modern bullion and proof versions the Royal Dutch Mint still issues today, the design has never changed.
The coins originally had a weight of 3.515 Grams and a metallic fineness of .986 pure gold content. In 1817, those figures were changed slightly as the weight was lowered to 3.454 Grams and the fineness to .983 pure gold. However, since that time no further changes have been made to the coins.
On the obverse face of a 1 Ducat Netherlands Gold Coin, you will find a knight standing in a slight-right-profile relief. This individual has a long sword in his right hand that rests on his right shoulder, while his left hand clutches a cluster of seven arrows gathered by a ribbon. The date mark will feature on this side of the coin and is split two digits on either side of the knight’s figure. The inscription around the outside on the obverse is in Latin and translates as “Union makes small things grow.”
The reverse side of 1 Ducat Netherlands Gold Coins features a plaque in the center with an ornamental design around it. The wording inside is all abbreviated Latin terms and phrases that translate as “A coin of the provinces of the United Netherlands according to the law of the Empire.”
