British Gold Coins at BullionMax

Gold, being the most highly sought-after investment metal for individuals aiming to safeguard their hard-earned wealth, can be acquired in various forms from mints worldwide. Private and sovereign facilities alike offer gold coins and bars, with the Royal Mint standing as one of the most renowned producers of gold products.

British Gold Sovereign Coins

Originating from the Great Recoinage of 1817, the modern British Gold Sovereign coin serves as the bullion iteration of the Gold Sovereign previously used in circulation within the United Kingdom from 1817 until the Interwar Era in the early 20th century.

While historical Gold Sovereigns varied in their gold content over time, the contemporary British Gold Sovereign is minted with 91.67% gold, constituting a 22-karat gold coin. For several decades, the coin showcased Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. However, following her passing in September 2022, early 2023 witnessed the introduction of the first Gold Sovereigns featuring a different monarch—King Charles III. Despite more than 200 years since its introduction, the Gold Sovereign predominantly displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s 1817 depiction of St. George slaying a dragon on the reverse, with occasional replacements on the reverse for commemorative occasions.

British Gold Britannia Coins

Undoubtedly, the British Gold Britannia coin serves as the cornerstone of the Royal Mint’s numismatic offerings in the gold bullion program. Introduced in 1987, these coins initially contained .917 fine gold. However, since 2013, they have been struck as 24-karat pure gold coins with a .9999 fine gold content. Celebrating their 30th anniversary of release in 2017, the British Gold Britannia coins mirror their silver counterparts in terms of design and significance.

While the reverse design has remained consistent, the obverse has differed over the years.

  • 1987-1997: Coins with this issue date feature the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf.
  • 1998-2015: Arguably the most well-known depiction of Queen Elizabeth II, coins with this issue date showcase the Ian Rank-Broadley depiction of Her Majesty.
  • 2016-2023: Coins with this issue date display the Jody Clark depiction of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • 2023-Present: With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the effigy of King Charles III is now shown on these coins. Martin Jennings created this design.
