The Liberty Double Eagle is one of the most iconic gold coin denominations in American history. First introduced in 1850, this $20 gold coin was produced until 1933, with only two main designs in its 84-year history. While the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is celebrated for its beauty, the Liberty Double Eagle holds the distinction of being the original and longest-used design for this denomination. Right now, Pre-1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The $20 Double Eagle was introduced in 1850, driven by the influx of gold during the California Gold Rush. As the largest gold coin denomination ever issued by the United States, these coins were primarily used for bank transactions and international trade. The Liberty Double Eagle, in use from 1850 to 1907, featured designs by James B. Longacre, who served as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
Each Pre-1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in this listing is offered in MS61 condition. These coins exhibit diminished mint luster, with various large and small contact marks present. Please note that the specific year of issue for these coins, ranging from 1850 to 1899, is not guaranteed. Additionally, label designs may vary, and coins will be certified by either PCGS or NGC.
On the obverse of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you’ll find a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty designed by Longacre. Inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s $10 Eagle, this depiction of Liberty features a coronet crown on her head, surrounded by 13 stars, with a date mark below.
The reverse of the Pre-1900 Liberty Double Eagle showcases the Great Seal of the United States. This bald eagle design went through three versions between 1850 and 1900. The original Type I design lacked the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and used “TWENTY D.” for the denomination. The Type II design, introduced in 1866, added the national motto above the eagle. Finally, the Type III design debuted in 1877, keeping the motto but updating the denomination to “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
