Product Details

The San Francisco Mint played a key role in producing the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, striking the coin from 1854 to 1907, with the exception of 1886. These coins were minted in response to the California Gold Rush and have since become popular collector’s items. Right now, Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with the Type II reverse from the San Francisco Mint are available at BullionMax.

  • Coin arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • Features the Type II reverse design!
  • Struck by the San Francisco Mint!
  • Dates available from 1866 to 1876!
  • Extremely Fine (XF) condition!
  • Contains .9675 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Face value of $20 (USD), backed by the United States.
  • Obverse depicts Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse shows the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Includes “S” mint marks for the San Francisco Mint.
  • Please note: Year of issue is random from the available range.

The obverse side of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features Lady Liberty. She is portrayed in a left-facing profile, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty.” The design is framed by 13 stars and includes the coin’s year of issue at the bottom.

On the reverse of Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you’ll find the Great Seal of the United States. This design showcases a bald eagle holding a shield in front, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both war and peace. Above the eagle, a ring of 13 stars surrounds the national motto, “In God We Trust.” These elements are specific to the Type II reverse, used from 1866 to 1876.

Following the Civil War, the United States Mint added the motto “In God We Trust” to promote unity, resulting in the creation of the Type II reverse. These coins were minted for only a decade before the reverse design changed again in 1877.

Each Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle in this listing is in Extremely Fine condition, meaning there is minimal wear, primarily on the high points, and traces of original mint luster may still be visible. Coins are randomly selected from the 1866-1876 range, and we cannot guarantee a specific year in advance.
