The S.S. Tilawa was sunk during World War II in November 1942, becoming a lesser-known but significant maritime tragedy in the Indian Ocean. The ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while traveling from Bombay to Mombasa and Durban. In addition to the tragic loss of 280 lives, the ship was carrying 2,364 silver bullion bars. These bars remained at the bottom of the ocean until their recovery in 2017, providing a unique opportunity to own a piece of history. Right now, S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Faceplates are available from BullionMax.
Product Highlights:
Each S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Faceplate is a rare collectible, offering a direct link to a historic maritime event. These faceplates weigh about 100 Troy ounces and were shaved from larger 1,000 Troy ounce silver bars recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa. They are carefully packaged in protective boxes to ensure safe delivery.
When the S.S. Tilawa sank, it was carrying a significant cargo of silver bullion bars intended for South Africa. These bars were meant to be refined into silver coinage, but the ship sank in the Indian Ocean at a depth of around 2,800 meters. The silver cargo stayed on the ocean floor for over 70 years before it was recovered by Argentum Exploration Ltd. in 2017.
These Shipwreck Silver Faceplates represent a direct connection to the tragic sinking of the S.S. Tilawa and its cargo of silver bullion. The silver used in these faceplates was originally refined during World War II, then sat on the ocean floor for decades. Once recovered, the silver bars were carefully shaved to create these 100 Troy ounce faceplates, each with a rich and unique history.
