From 1997 to 2017, the obverse showcased the Statue of Liberty as designed by John Mercanti, while the reverse had different images, often featuring American bald eagles or government seals. Since 2018, the obverse has carried changing Liberty designs, with the reverse now consistently featuring an American eagle.

The American Platinum Eagle is the only annual platinum coin series from the US Mint, introduced after the Gold and Silver Eagles. Since 2009, both Proof and BU versions have only been offered in the 1 oz platinum weight.
