One of the lesser-known releases in the American Eagle Series is the Burnished Platinum Eagle. In 2006, the United States Mint introduced Burnished versions of the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle as collectible options. These coins were also referred to as Uncirculated Eagles and featured a distinct matte finish. This finish was achieved by polishing the blanks in tumbling machines with a medium that “burnished” the coin’s surface. While the Burnished Silver and Gold Eagles remain in production, the Burnished Platinum Eagles were only struck from 2006 to 2008. Now, certified 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished American Platinum Eagle Coins are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
On the obverse of the 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle, the design features John Mercanti’s portrait of the Statue of Liberty. Originally created for the Platinum Eagle Series in 1997, this depiction captures the head of the Statue of Liberty in a front-facing relief, with her iconic crown as a central element.
The reverse of the 2008-W Burnished American Platinum Eagle showcases the last design in the Foundations of Democracy Series. From 2006 to 2008, Burnished and Proof Platinum Eagles featured changing reverse designs representing the three branches of the U.S. government. The 2008 design represents the Judicial Branch, depicting Lady Justice alongside an American bald eagle.
From 2006 to 2008, the United States Mint offered Burnished Platinum Eagles in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes. After 2008, the fractional-ounce Platinum Eagles were discontinued, and the Burnished Platinum Eagle Series was retired entirely. The 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle had the lowest mintage of its weight across the three years of production, making it one of the rarest Burnished Platinum Eagles, second only to the 2008-W 1/2 oz version.
These 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished American Platinum Eagle Coins are in perfect condition. Coins graded Mint State 70 have no flaws and retain their full, original mint luster. Each one comes sealed in a protective plastic slab.
