Australia’s original florin coin, crafted in sterling silver, displayed a portrait of King Edward VII on its obverse. Produced by the Royal Mint in Melbourne, it reflected Australia’s emerging identity and economic strides as a nation. Based on the British florin, which was introduced in 1847 under Queen Victoria, this coin represented two shillings in the pre-decimal currency.

Each 2022 1/4 oz Australian Platinum Florin Coin here comes individually sealed in a plastic flip. This release marks the third coin in the Perth Mint’s Florin series, following the 2021 releases of a 2 oz silver florin and a 1/4 oz gold florin. The 2022 coin marks the first time the florin is issued in platinum, adding a unique touch to the series.

On the obverse, the 2022 Platinum Florin features the sixth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed in 2015 by artist Jody Clark. Her Majesty is shown in a right-facing profile with the George IV State Diadem.

The reverse side presents the 1910 design of Australia’s coat of arms, a lasting symbol of the country’s national pride. Featuring an emu and a kangaroo supporting a central shield, the coat of arms represents Australia’s native fauna and unity among its states. The shield itself includes the badges of the six states, and the Commonwealth Star above with seven points represents each state and one territory, reflecting the strength of Australia’s federation.
