The SS Tilawa, often called the “Indian Titanic,” tragically sank in 1942 after being struck by Japanese torpedoes during World War II. It was on a voyage from Bombay to Durban when disaster struck, taking many lives and sending 2,364 silver bars to the bottom of the Indian Ocean. After lying on the ocean floor for decades, around 60 tons of silver were recovered in 2017 through a secretive salvage operation. Right now, 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds are available online from BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
On the obverse of the 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds, you’ll find a detailed design that commemorates the final voyage of this historic ship. The S.S. Tilawa is shown from a bird’s-eye perspective, sailing across the Indian Ocean. In the background, a map charts its route from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa.
The reverse design of the S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round honors the S.S. Tilawa itself, showing it peacefully sailing. Originally built in 1924 as a passenger liner for the British India Steam Navigation Company, the ship was later used by the Royal Navy during World War II as a troop and cargo transport before its tragic end in 1942.
With this series, collectors and history enthusiasts can own a unique piece of maritime history. The silver used to create these rounds was salvaged from the wreck of the SS Tilawa, which was discovered in 2014 and recovered in 2017. This collection commemorates both the ship’s fateful journey and the incredible recovery of the long-lost silver.
Your 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round is available with a protective plastic flip, tube of 20, or box of 500. These rounds were all made with the silver salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa in 2017 after it sat on the seafloor for more than 75 years.
