The SS Tilawa, sometimes called the “Indian Titanic,” was a passenger ship that sank during World War II after being struck by Japanese torpedoes. It was traveling from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa, carrying passengers and a large cargo of silver bars. In 2017, a secret recovery operation salvaged nearly 60 tons of silver from the shipwreck. Now, 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds are available at BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
The S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Series offers collectors and silver enthusiasts the chance to own a piece of history. The SS Tilawa, a British India Steam Navigation Company liner, was torpedoed and sunk in the Indian Ocean on November 23, 1942, while carrying a shipment of 60 tons of silver bullion. The shipwreck remained lost until it was rediscovered in 2014, with the silver recovered in 2017. The series includes rounds, bars, and grains, all made from silver reclaimed from the ocean floor, celebrating the ship’s final voyage and the recovery of its valuable cargo.
Each 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round comes in protective plastic flips, tubes of 20, or boxes of 800. As the smallest round in the Tilawa Shipwreck Series, these pieces are crafted from silver salvaged from the wreck. Recovered after spending 76 years underwater, this silver has been refined and minted into a unique collectible round.
The obverse of the S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round shows the ship’s final journey. A bird’s-eye view of the ship sailing across the Indian Ocean is depicted, along with a map showing its route from Bombay (now Mumbai, India) to Durban, South Africa, in 1942.
On the reverse side of the 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round, you’ll find a different view of the SS Tilawa at sea. This design shows the ship as it might have looked during its final voyage before its tragic sinking.
