Shipwreck silver offers a unique opportunity for both investors and collectors, combining the value of silver bullion with a fascinating piece of history. When silver is salvaged from a shipwreck, it brings with it a rich story, like that of the S.S. Tilawa. This vessel, which met a tragic fate during World War II, carried a significant silver cargo across the Indian Ocean in November 1942. The silver from the Tilawa was salvaged in 2017 and, after legal disputes over ownership, it has been refined into commemorative pieces. Now, 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars are available at BullionMax.
Bar Highlights:
The S.S. Tilawa was one of many casualties of World War II. Originally used by the Royal Navy as a troop transport to and from British ports in India, the Tilawa set sail from Bombay (modern-day Mumbai) to Durban, South Africa, in November 1942. On board were 732 passengers, 222 crew members, and 600 tons of cargo, including 60 tons of silver in the form of 2,364 silver bars. Unfortunately, the Tilawa never completed its journey.
These 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars are sealed in protective plastic, with boxes for multiples of 500, and made from silver that was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa. Each bar is designed to honor the legacy of the ship, connecting its story to more than 80 years of history.
On the obverse side of the 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bar, you’ll find a wave-patterned background, along with an emblem paying tribute to the S.S. Tilawa. The bar’s identifying hallmarks are also displayed on this side.
The reverse of the S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bar depicts the lost vessel, seen from water level, as it sails through the ocean with clouds filling the sky above. The original silver cargo on the S.S. Tilawa was intended for the South African Mint, to be made into Egyptian and South African silver coins. After being retrieved from the ocean floor in 2017, the silver’s ownership was only settled in May 2024.
Shipwreck silver is a truly special option for silver buyers. The historical significance and the rarity of these items make them a great collectible.
