The S.S. Tilawa met a tragic fate during World War II, often likened to the Indian Titanic. Originally setting sail from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa, the ship was struck down by Japanese torpedoes before it could reach its destination. Along with the unfortunate loss of lives, the ship carried 2,364 silver bars that sank deep into the Indian Ocean. In 2017, nearly 60 tons of silver were salvaged from the wreckage in a covert operation that later sparked controversy. Now, you can own a piece of this remarkable history with the 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round, available online at BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
Each of these 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds comes securely packaged in a plastic flip, a tube of 20, or a box of 500. These rounds are crafted using silver recovered from the S.S. Tilawa in 2017. After a lengthy legal battle over the rights to this silver, it has finally been refined and struck into these special commemorative pieces.
The S.S. Tilawa embarked on its journey in November 1942, carrying passengers and silver cargo from what is now Mumbai, India, to Durban, South Africa. The silver aboard was intended for the South African Mint, where it would have been used to create silver coins for South Africa and Egypt.
On the obverse of the S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round, there is an aerial view of the S.S. Tilawa. The ship is shown navigating calm seas, with a detailed map of its intended route from India to South Africa displayed in the background.
The reverse side of the 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round features a striking image of the ship sailing across the Indian Ocean. This view from the stern is haunting, reminiscent of the perspective Japanese submariners might have had as they set their sights on the vessel. On November 23, 1942, two torpedoes struck the Tilawa, sending it to the depths of the ocean.
Shipwreck silver like this is a rare find, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of history. If you have any questions when you buy silver rounds, please feel free to ask. BullionMax customer service is available at 800-729-3202, online using our web chat, and via our email address.
