SOLD OUT AT PERTH MINT
Fifth year of the series – mintage capped at just 250,000 coins worldwide!
Perth Mint celebrates the powerful symbolism of the Eastern dragon with this 2022 1 oz silver dragon bar coin, the fifth release in Perth Mint’s rectangular dragon coins series. Like prior years, the obverse of the 2022 edition features Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. But you’re not here for Her Highness – you’re here for the dragon…
Perth Mint’s fresh 2022 take on the Chinese dragon shows us a powerful sky dragon, his mouth agape, poised to consume a flaming sphere in the lower-right corner of the coin. The Perth Mint’s iconic “P” mintmark appears unobtrusively in the upper left. This Sean Rogers-designed scene captures the essence of the medieval Chinese belief that solar eclipses were caused by hungry dragons who temporarily swallowed the sun. Down on the ground, crowds gathered to set off fireworks and play music, raising a cacophony to frighten the dragon away and rescuing the sun from digestion.
Due to its changing design, unusual shape and compelling imagery, Perth Mint’s Australian rectangular dragon coins have been a huge hit with collectors worldwide. We don’t expect our supply of 1 oz silver dragon coins to last long, so better buy yours right now!
Despite their occasional hangry episodes, dragons are potent symbols in China. Dragons represent good luck, success, great strength and determination. Eastern dragons aren’t cave-dwelling carnivores like the dragons of Western myth. Rather, they represent primal elemental forces like storms and tidal waves that could sometimes be propitiated through worship.
The dragon symbolizes supernatural power, wisdom, strength, and hidden knowledge. In most traditions, it is the embodiment of chaos and untamed nature – the fundamental forces of creation and destruction. It is associated with the depths of the unknown sea, with the mountaintops, and with the clouds. Dragons are also usually guardians of a treasure, whether material (gold) or symbolic (knowledge).
