Designed by George T. Morgan, the Morgan Silver Dollar was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1878 and continued to be produced annually until 1904, with a final strike in 1921. This iconic coin circulated throughout significant periods in American history, including the Reconstruction Era, the Gilded Age, and into the Roaring Twenties. Currently, 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip. For larger orders, coins are available in multiples of 20. All coins in this listing are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
The 1878 release marked the beginning of the Morgan Silver Dollar series, reviving the tradition of striking Silver Dollars in the U.S. The earlier Seated Liberty Dollar was discontinued in 1873, ending free silver coining. After five years, the Morgan Silver Dollar made its debut, showcasing the artistry of George T. Morgan, who was a new Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint at the time.
The obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. It is believed that Morgan drew inspiration from Anna Willes Williams for this portrait. Lady Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap, adorned with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown, with a ring of 13 stars surrounding her.
On the reverse side of the 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar, you’ll find the heraldic eagle. Unlike other versions, Morgan’s depiction of the eagle does not include a U.S. national shield. However, it features the American bald eagle in a front-facing pose with its wings spread. The eagle clutches arrows representing war in one talon and an olive branch symbolizing peace in the other.
