The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most well-known silver dollars in the history of the United States. First introduced in 1878, the coin was produced annually until 1904, with a brief return in 1921 when silver dollar production was temporarily revived. During its time in circulation, the US Mint struck Morgan Dollars at various branch mints, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver. Today, you can get the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar was minted at four different facilities. The San Francisco Mint had the largest output, striking 12.76 million coins, while Carson City had the lowest production at just 296,000 coins. Philadelphia and New Orleans also contributed to the 1881 mintage, producing 9.163 million and 5.708 million coins, respectively.
All of the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available here are graded MS64+ by NGC. These coins have a slightly better-than-average mint luster, with minor contact marks, some of which might appear in key visual areas. A coin graded MS64+ is considered to be in great condition for its grade, though it may not quite meet the quality standards of an MS65 coin.
On the obverse of the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar, you’ll find a lovely image of Lady Liberty. This design, created by George T. Morgan in 1878, shows Liberty in a left-facing profile. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath and a crown. The design is framed by 13 stars, symbolizing the original colonies.
The reverse side of the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar features a unique version of the heraldic eagle. Also designed by George T. Morgan, this image displays a bald eagle with wings spread wide, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, representing the balance between war and peace.
