Silver dollars have a storied history in the United States, with the Morgan Silver Dollar being one of the most celebrated designs in the series. First issued in 1878, this coin has seen its fair share of ups and downs, including a 17-year break in production before a final release in 1921. Right now, 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, packaged in a protective plastic flip for safekeeping. This 1921 release marked the end of the Morgan Dollar series, which began in 1878 when these coins symbolized America’s western frontier. After 27 years of production, the series took a break, only to return briefly in 1921 for one last mintage.
The 1921 Morgan Dollar release represented a revival of the American silver dollar after silver dollar production paused in 1904. During and after World War I, the U.S. melted millions of silver dollars to assist European allies with bullion needs. Some of this reclaimed silver was used to mint new coins in 1921, when the Morgan Dollar design was brought back, just before a new coin design was set to debut.
The obverse side of the 1921 Morgan Dollar shows a left-profile portrait of Liberty. She is depicted with a Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom, along with a coronet and laurel wreath. The design is completed with the date and a border of 13 stars, representing the original American colonies.
On the reverse, the coin features the iconic heraldic eagle, symbolizing American strength. This detailed design presents a front-facing eagle clutching both arrows of war and an olive branch of peace. Created by George T. Morgan, who began his work as an Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint in 1878, these designs were revived with new dies for the 1921 reissue, marking Morgan’s enduring legacy as he served as the 7th Chief Engraver of the Mint.
