In 2001, the United States Mint brought back one of its most beloved designs for the first time since 1936. To honor the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, the US Mint released Proof and BU Buffalo Silver Dollars featuring the iconic imagery from James Earle Fraser’s historic Buffalo Nickel. Right now, you can find the 2001-D Buffalo Silver Dollar Coins at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2001-D Buffalo Silver Dollar available here is in near-perfect condition. Rated Mint State 69, these coins exhibit full, original mint luster and have no more than two minor imperfections. Such minor flaws could include tiny contact marks or hairlines, which must be located outside the primary focal points of the coin. The US Mint produced a total of 500,000 coins, with proof specimens from the Philadelphia Mint and Brilliant Uncirculated coins from the Denver Mint. Each coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper.
The release of the 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar honored the National Museum of the American Indian. Established by an Act of Congress in 1989, the museum building in Washington, D.C. was designed by Native American architect Douglas Cardinal of the Blackfoot tribe. Its curvilinear architecture is inspired by natural rock formations shaped by wind and water over thousands of years, reflecting Native American building traditions.
The obverse of the 2001-D Buffalo Dollar Coin features James Earle Fraser’s depiction of a stoic indigenous figure. Created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel, this image shows the figure in right-profile relief and is said to have been inspired by the facial features of three real-world indigenous leaders of the early 20th century.
On the reverse side of the 2001-D Buffalo Silver Dollars, you’ll find the American bison. Also designed by Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, this image shows the bison in left-profile relief on a small mound of land as it grazes. The design was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
