The 2004 Lunar Monkey coin is the sixth release in the Lunar Series I collection of silver coins. The gold coins in the Lunar Series I started in 1996, with the first silver coins appearing three years later.

On the obverse of the 2004 Australian Silver Lunar Monkey, you’ll find Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This well-known design was created in 1998 and was used on coins across the Commonwealth up to at least 2015. For the Lunar Series coins from Perth Mint, it remained in use until 2019.

The reverse design of the 2004 1/2 oz Silver Lunar Monkey Coin showcases Sarah Anderson’s depiction for the Year of the Monkey. A small monkey is seen sitting on a tree branch, with leaves framing the edges of the coin’s design.
