First released by the Perth Mint in 2007, the Australian Koala Series is a yearly silver coin program that highlights one of Australia’s most recognizable animals. In earlier years, the coins were made in four different weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo. Today, the series continues with just the 1 oz and 1 Kilo versions. One of the standout features of this series is its annually changing koala design. Right now, BullionMax offers the 2010 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala Coin.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2010 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala Coin offered here ships in its own plastic capsule. The Perth Mint produced a total of 30,692 of these 1 Kilo coins in 2010, making it the second-highest mintage that year after the 1 oz version. In addition to the 1 Kilo and 1 oz coins, 2010 also saw the release of a 1/2 oz coin (13,315 minted) and a 10 oz coin (12,928 minted).
Koalas have a unique relationship with eucalyptus trees, often called gum trees. These animals eat almost nothing but eucalyptus leaves, which are poisonous to many other species. Koalas have evolved a digestive system that can break down the toxic compounds in the leaves, and their powerful jaws help them chew through the tough texture.
The obverse of the 2010 Silver Koala Coin shows Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. She is wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara in this design created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. This portrait was widely used on coins throughout the Queen’s reign.
On the reverse side of the 2010 1 Kilo coin, you’ll see a koala climbing on all fours along a branch of a gum tree. These trees are not just a food source for koalas—they also provide shelter. Koalas spend much of their time in the trees, often sleeping for up to 20 hours a day to conserve energy and stay safe from predators.
