About the Blue Ridge Parkway silver coin

Obverse

Each obverse of the coins in America the Beautiful series features the portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, which was used in the United States quarters since 1932.

Reverse

The reverse of the beautiful Blue Ridge silver bullion depicts a winding North Carolina road entering into one of the parkway's iconic tunnels. The tunnels give a classic impression of the Blue Ridge. The great arch shape and the stonework in these tunnels are characteristic of the North Carolinian construction style. The Blue Ridge Parkway has 26 tunnels along its 469 miles that stretch from Rockfish Gap, Va., to Cherokee, N.C. Twenty-five tunnels are on the North Carolina side of the park.

You can also see a flowering dogwood, (Cornus florida) in the foreground on the coin's bottom right. The flowering dogwood enchants people, locals, and tourists, every spring. It is common in the wild across thickets in damp meadows in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina. The North Carolina General Assembly designated the dogwood tree (Cornaceae) flower as the official state flower of North Carolina in 1941. Even before being established as a state flower, the dogwood and its beautiful flowers have been a symbol of North Carolina.

The reverse is sculpted by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna and designed by Memphis artist and illustrator Frank Morris.

About the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina is known for its scenic beauty stretching from the borders of both the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, offering stunning views of Appalachia and a preview of its culture. Among the many things, the Blue Ridge Parkway is also known as "America's Favorite Drive." The man-made scenic byway is filled with natural attractions, recreational opportunities, and a cross-section of Appalachian mountain settlements.

Here a few interesting facts about the Blue Ridge Parkway:

  • The Blue Ridge is one of the most ecologically diverse areas globally, with about 1,600 plant species, 159 species of birds, 54 mammals, and over 100 varieties of trees.
  • Led by rangers, it took 52 years to build the Blue Ridge roadway from start to finish. According to the National Park Service, the work was started during President Franklin Roosevelt's administration. It was opened in the 1960s as most of the parkway was finished. Incredible!
  • Blue Ridge is a series of parks stretching 500 miles providing the visitor access to high mountain passes, a continuous series of panoramic views, the boundaries of its limited right-of-way rarely apparent, and miles of the adjacent countryside seemingly a part of the protected scene.
  • The parkway also provides access to some of the oldest settlements of both prehistoric and early European settlement.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a "museum of the managed American countryside" and has made itself a worthy addition to America the Beautiful's range of truly American coins.
