About the Kisatchie National Forest coin
The obverse of the Silver 5-oz ATB 2015 and every ATB coin, features the iconic effigy of George Washington by John Flanagan, a characteristic of United States Quarters used since 1932.
The reverse of the ATB 5 oz Kisatchie Coin features a wild turkey lifting into flight over a blue stem grass-covered plain with a pine forest in the background depicting the ecosystem at Kitsache. The reverse design was developed in consultation with representatives of Kisatchie National Forest. The wild turkey might not be the prominent symbol of Louisiana, but the hard work and success in conserving the wild turkey population in the forest is a feat worthy of coinage. Through multiple efforts, the wild turkey population at the Kisatchie National Forest and across Louisiana are now thriving and the best in the South.
The background in the reverse of the bullion coin also depicts Louisiana's piney woodland. The national forest is also home to vast multiple groves of longleaf pine trees, known as "the tree that built the South." Kisatchie was filled with timber, and much of it was in pure stands of magnificent longleaf pine. The quality, volume, and level terrain helped the woodland's growth, which once made Louisiana a leader in lumber production years ago.
About Kisatchie National Forest
Kisatchie National Forest covers 604,000 acres of piney woodland and protects Louisiana's almost forgotten natural landscape and the diversity of species the forest is home to.
The name Kisatchie is derived from the Kichai Indians, a Native American Southern Plains tribe that lived in Louisiana, who called themselves "Kitsatchie." In the early 1900s, 85% of Louisiana was covered in forested land, and the state was a leader in timber production. As the Great Depression gripped the nation, many sawmills closed, and Louisiana's natural resources were depleted. Realizing the need for rehabilitation and preservation, the Herbert Hoover administration designated the Kisatchie National Forest in 1930.
With joint national and local conservation efforts, The Kisatchie National Forest is now green again and teeming with wildlife. The Kisatchie National Forest is every forester's dream. It remains Louisiana's only national forest.
The Silver 5-oz ATB 2015 Kisatchie celebrates Louisiana's conservation of the Kisatchie National Forest. The coins, like the rest in America the Beautiful series, have a nominal value of $0.25, but their 0.999 fine silver content makes them worth much more valuable. These are among the first 5 oz, 0.999 fine silver bullion coins ever produced by the United States Mint.
