The Silver 5-oz ATB 2016 Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the first release of the 2016 America the Beautiful series, and the 31st coin in the entire collection. The commemorative coin features the uniquely beautiful, but vast Shawnee National Forest as the representative for the state of Illinois.

The coin itself doesn’t differ from the rest of the ATB collection in the way that it consists of 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver. It also bears a face value of $.25 (USD) backed by the federal government.

The reverse side of the Silver 5-oz ATB 2016 Shawnee National Forest Coin features the image of the famous Camel Rock, located in the Garden of the Gods Recreation area. Because it represents the beauty of the forest and the state of Illinois, it was chosen as the design to be featured on the ATB coin. It also features a red-tailed hawk flying over Camel Rock and the vegetation around it. The inscriptions state the featured forest, the state and date of issue, and the old Latin motto “E Pluribus Unum."

The obverse of the coin features the classic left-profile portrait of George Washington, the first elected president and one of the founding fathers. The design was introduced by Congress on the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1932, and it was created by John Flanagan. It also includes the notable ideal of “Liberty” which the first president was fond of, and the official U.S. motto “In God We Trust."

About the Shawnee National Forest

Shawnee National Forest is a United States National Forest located in the Ozark and Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois. It consists of nearly 280,000 acres of federally managed lands. Once designated as the Illini and Shawnee Purchase Units, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared them to be the Shawnee National Forest in September 1939.

At first most of the land was exhausted farmland, but throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the Civilian Conservation Corps had planted pine trees to rebuild the soil and prevent further erosion. Much later in the 1980s and 1990s, there was an active battle for conservation and protest efforts by the local, regional, and national environmentalist groups and individuals ranging from radical to moderate and mainstream organizations. The wise use movement played an active role in lobbying its vision of the Shawnee National Forest. Today a more cooperative atmosphere has developed.

The National Forest also features interesting geographic and geologic points of interest, like the Little Grand Canyon or the artificial Cedar lake. It also includes 7 officially designated wilderness areas lying within the park that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.

In those situations, we appreciate your patience to wait a little longer for your package (at least 7 business days) before contacting us. Should the package not arrive, an investigation of the shipment is required before any order is reshipped or refunded. We may ask you to file a police report if it appears loss is due to theft or tampering. Your assistance speeds up the investigation and the sooner we complete it, the sooner we can resolve the missing order.
