Product details

As the 1st release of 2017 and the 36th coin in the overall ATB collection, the Effigy Mounds silver coin represents the state of Iowa and its Native American heritage. The coin consists of 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver.

It also retains the classic obverse design featuring the prominent central image of President George Washington. “In God We Trust," the official U.S. motto is inscribed next to his image, along with the foundational concept of the founding fathers’ “Liberty." The design was created in 1932 by John Flanagan on the 200th anniversary of the first president’s birth.

About Effigy Mounds National Monument

The Effigy Mounds National Monument is an American National Monument primarily located in Allamakee County, while a smart part is located in Clayton County, Iowa. It consists of over 200 early, prehistoric Native American mounds. Most of them are shaped like animals, most commonly including bears, like the Big Bear Mound, and birds. Historians agree that they were mostly built in the first millennium by groups of people of the Woodland Culture.

Mound builder cultures were common during the prehistoric times in the Midwest, but mounds in the shapes of animals, called effigies, were not as common. They were constructed mostly by early people in areas that are today known as southern Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, and small parts of Minnesota and Illinois.

The Monument itself spans over an area of 2,526 acres. It consists of 206 mounds, of which 31 are effigies. They are divided into 3 units. The North Unit (67 mounds) and South Unit (29 mounds) are located around the junction near the Mississippi River, and they are easily accessible. The Sny Magill Unit is the largest one, and it consists of 112 mounds. It’s worth mentioning that the largest unit is inaccessible.
